How Does SpaceOAR® Hydrogel Work?

SpaceOAR Hydrogel – Spacing Organs At Risk (OAR): Reducing Radiation Exposure For Men Receiving Prostate Cancer Radiation Therapy

SpaceOAR Hydrogel has been utilised in 25,000 implantations worldwide. It is shown to reduce rectal injury in men receiving prostate cancer radiation therapy (RT) by creating space – pushing the rectum away from the prostate (on average over 1cm of space for the duration of radiotherapy).

A Little Space Makes a BIG Difference®

Placed between the prostate and rectum, SpaceOAR hydrogel pushes the rectum out of the high dose radiation region. Healthy surrounding tissue can be damaged by the high dose radiation. That’s why the rectum is called the Organ ARisk (OAR) during prostate radiation therapy.

SpaceOAR hydrogel pushes the rectum out of the damaging radiation field. This may help prevent prostate radiation side effects

Without SpaceOAR Hydrogel
The rectum is situated next to the prostate with a thin layer of perirectal fat separating the two organs, complicating prostate radiation therapy. Rectal injury from irradiation may lead to proctitis, rectal bleeding and fecal incontinence.

With SpaceOAR Hydrogel

The SpaceOAR Spacer pushes the rectum away from the prostate by an average of 1.3cm, decreasing rectal injury during prostate radiotherapy.

SpaceOAR Hydrogel Pushes The Rectum Out Of The High Dose Radiation Field

The soft gel spacer is injected during a minimally invasive procedure, and — once in place — patients typically can’t feel it. SpaceOAR hydrogel is made of two liquids that when combined form a soft, gel-like synthetic material that is mostly made of water. Because of its water content, it is called a hydrogel. The material that the SpaceOAR hydrogel is made from has been used in other implants such as surgical sealants used on the eye, brain and spine. Studies have shown that the material is biocompatible and can be used safely in the body. The SpaceOAR hydrogel maintains space for the entire course of prostate radiotherapy treatment. The patient’s body completely absorbs it over time.
